Bert

Bert is a 3 year old St. Bernard who came into rescue because his family felt unequipped to deal with his issues around guarding them and the home.

For the first few years of his life, Bert was a well socialised dog who was friendly with new people and lived with small children in a family home. As he hit maturity he began to be become more defensive towards some people out on walks and to anyone visiting his home. He never displayed any aggression to anyone living in his family home.

Bert now finds himself in rescue needing a new home, and has now been neutered.

Because of his behavioural issues and his size - the following criteria is essential and is non negotiable -

*A home without other dogs, cats or small furries.

* An adult home without children.

* A home with one or two people who have experience with large dogs who show guarding tendencies.

* A home prepared to make several meets to Dartford to gain his trust.

* A home who has strategies in place when visitors come to their house and can segregate him as needed.

* Bert is a big, strong boy, so his handler must feel confident and be physically capable of handling him

Once Bert trusts you, he is the soppiest, sweetest and slobbery pup! He is clean in the house and shows no obvious signs of separation anxiety. But it must be acknowledged that once he bonds with you, he will guard you from other people and visitors in the home. Full behavioural support will be given but you must have experience in this area as Bert is not for the faint-hearted or first time dog owner!

He will require ongoing training and management using only positive and force free methods.

Bert travels well in the car and although he previously lived with a dog would benefit from more socialisation around other dogs, once he is settled in his home, as he is likely to guard the person on the end of his lead from other dogs as well as people.

His ideal home would be with one large breed experienced person, or a couple. He would not cope with multiple adults living in the same household.

We are completely realistic that Bert is not the easiest dog initially, but once he bonds to you, you will have the most loyal and loving best friend that you could have dreamed of. With time, patience and high value treats - the right person will win him over quite quickly, but will need to be able to demonstrate that he will not be returned to rescue because they are unable to manage him with new people once he is rehomed.
