Welcoming Edna!!

Edna is a 14 Shiatzu who came into our care after being dumped and ending up in council kennels.

Despite having a large tumour in her mouth, mammary tumours and being emaciated.  Edna arrived with a sassy pants tail wag and a vocal enthusiastic hello to everyone she meets!!

At 14 years old, we carefully considered her quality of life before putting her through surgery. She left us in no doubt that she still loves life — she is bright, happy, and still enjoys all the things that matter to her. Her age is just a number; her spirit certainly doesn’t match it.

Mouth lump:

She had a large growth on her gum near her upper canine tooth. This was removed completely. The laboratory results confirmed it was a benign (non-cancerous) gum growth, and importantly it had not spread into the bone. It has been fully excised and no further treatment is needed.

Mammary lumps:

She had small lumps on both sides of her mammary chain, which have also been surgically removed.

  • On the right-hand side, this was a low-grade (grade 1) mammary carcinoma. This is the mildest form, with a low risk of spread, and the vet achieved good surgical margins. Surgery is expected to be curative.
  • On the left-hand side, the lump was mostly a benign tumour, with some early malignant changes. It was also graded as low risk and has been fully removed.

Before surgery, she had full blood tests carried out and all results were normal. She also had chest X-rays to check for any signs of spread, and these were completely clear.

She has now been spayed, which significantly reduces the risk of any future mammary tumours.

She has recovered beautifully from her surgeries and is feeling great. At this stage, no further treatment is recommended — just normal routine monitoring as you would with any dog. Her weight is increasing…she absolutely loves eating so that’s an easy win!!

Edna enjoys her walks and loves cuddles! She has met other dogs without issues and could live as the only dog or with a dog of similar size and age. She would be enjoy a home with an active retired person who is home all day but still enjoys a walk to the park. Visiting respectful children would be fine. She is not cat tested.

If you are looking for a super sweet companion to dote on and be doted on by…Edna could just be your perfect match!
